Mad 46 Rooftop Lounge is what you expect of a midtown lounge in the sky. It was plush with fancy couches and outdoor seating, not to mention the fancy decor. It had a manufactured waiting line on the ground floor to make it appear as if the rooftop was so overflowing with people that the mere addition of one more person would have sent someone off the edge. And naturally, the drinks were priced at $15 and up.
To put it mildly, there was not much to be inspired by at Mad 46. That’s not to say I did not have a good time. I was there with friends from business school, which automatically made it worth the visit. And despite coming out a few pounds lighter on the account that I paid in cash at the bar, it is certainly a place I would go to again–if invited.
But the truth is, there are a dozen places like this in midtown alone. The way too many doormen, the aggressive waitstaff asking you if want a new drink every 10 seconds, and the smarmy financial types that start popping bottles at 6:30pm (I won’t comment on whether or not such foes were included among my group of alumni) all made this place just like every other midtown, rooftop bar and lounge.
Still, if you work on the east side of midtown, do not have anything to do afterwork and you want to go somewhere in which there will be plenty of people, lots bars and more traditional afterwork talk than you can imagine, then Mad 46 Rooftop is your place. However, I suggest you heed this advice: go with a large group of people you like, or don’t go at all.
